A Venous and Arterial Doppler Ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that evaluates both veins and arteries in a limb (either leg or arm). It helps assess blood flow, blockages, and circulation issues in the vascular system.

Why is a Venous & Arterial Doppler Done?

Venous Doppler (Veins):

  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) – Detects blood clots that can cause serious complications like pulmonary embolism.

  • Varicose Veins – Evaluates valve function and vein enlargement.

  • Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) – Identifies issues with veins not returning blood properly to the heart, leading to swelling.

  • Venous Blockages or Trauma – Assesses blood flow in case of injury or after surgery.

Arterial Doppler (Arteries):

  • Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) – Detects narrowing or blockages in arteries due to atherosclerosis (plaque buildup).

  • Claudication (Leg Pain with Walking) – Evaluates blood supply to muscles.

  • Rest Pain or Ulcers – Checks circulation in cases of non-healing wounds or gangrene.

  • Arterial Aneurysms – Identifies abnormal dilations in arteries.

  • Post-Surgical or Trauma Assessment – Monitors blood flow after vascular procedures.

Preparation for the Test

  • No fasting required

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing

  • Avoid applying lotion or oils on the limb being examined

Procedure

  1. You will lie on an examination table, and the affected limb will be exposed.

  2. A gel is applied to the skin for better ultrasound transmission.

  3. A transducer (probe) is moved along the limb to capture images.

  4. Color Doppler technology assesses blood flow speed and direction in the veins and arteries.

  5. The technician may use blood pressure cuffs on the limb to measure pressure differences.

  6. The test is painless, but slight pressure may be applied to check for vein compressibility.

  7. The procedure takes around 30-45 minutes.

Is a Doppler Ultrasound Safe?

Yes, it is completely safe, non-invasive, and radiation-free.
✅ Can be performed on patients of any age, including pregnant women.
