A USG (Ultrasonography) Abdomen test is a non-invasive imaging procedure that uses sound waves to create real-time images of the abdominal organs. It helps diagnose and monitor conditions related to the liver, kidneys, pancreas, spleen, gallbladder, and other structures in the abdomen.

Why is it Done?

A USG abdomen may be recommended for:

• Abdominal pain

• Liver disease (e.g., fatty liver, cirrhosis)

• Kidney stones or infections

• Gallbladder issues (e.g., gallstones, inflammation)

• Pancreatic disorders

• Ascites (fluid accumulation in the abdomen)

• Abdominal masses or tumors

Preparation for USG Abdomen:

• Fasting for 6-8 hours (for better visualization of organs like the gallbladder)

• Drinking water and holding urine (for bladder ultrasound, if needed)

• Wearing loose clothing

Procedure:

1. The patient lies on an examination table.

2. A gel is applied to the abdomen to help transmit sound waves.

3. The sonographer moves a handheld probe (transducer) over the abdomen.

4. Images of internal organs appear on a monitor.

The test is painless, radiation-free, and takes around 15-30 minutes.
