USG TVS (Transvaginal Ultrasound) for Pelvis

A Transvaginal Ultrasound (TVS) is a specialized internal ultrasound scan used to examine the female pelvic organs in greater detail. Unlike a transabdominal ultrasound, where the probe is placed on the abdomen, TVS involves inserting a small transducer into the vagina for a closer and clearer view of the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and surrounding structures.

Why is a TVS Done?

TVS is recommended to detect and diagnose:
Uterine conditions: Fibroids, polyps, endometrial abnormalities
Ovarian issues: Cysts, tumors, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
Endometriosis
Irregular menstrual cycles, abnormal bleeding, or infertility issues
Early pregnancy monitoring & ectopic pregnancy detection
Assessing IUD (intrauterine device) position

Preparation for TVS:

  • 🧴 No fasting required

  • 🚽 Empty the bladder before the scan (unlike transabdominal ultrasound, a full bladder is NOT needed)

  • 🩺 Wear comfortable clothing for easy access

Procedure:

  1. You will be asked to lie down with your knees bent.

  2. A thin, lubricated transducer (probe) covered with a protective sheath is gently inserted into the vagina.

  3. The probe emits sound waves to create clear images of pelvic organs.

  4. The doctor or sonographer moves the probe slightly for different views.

  5. The procedure is painless (though mild discomfort may occur) and takes about 10-15 minutes.

Is TVS Safe?

Yes, it is completely safe, non-invasive, and does not use radiation.
