USG Neck (Ultrasound of the Neck)

A Neck Ultrasound (USG Neck) is a non-invasive imaging test that uses sound waves to evaluate the thyroid gland, lymph nodes, salivary glands, blood vessels, and other soft tissues in the neck. It is painless, radiation-free, and provides real-time imaging for diagnosing various neck-related conditions.

Why is a Neck Ultrasound Done?

A USG Neck is commonly used to assess:

Thyroid gland

  • Thyroid nodules, cysts, or enlargement (goiter)

  • Thyroid tumors (benign or malignant)

  • Thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid)

Lymph Nodes

  • Enlarged or swollen lymph nodes (due to infections, inflammation, or cancer)

  • Lymph node abnormalities (metastasis from other cancers)

Salivary Glands

  • Salivary gland stones, infections, or tumors (e.g., parotid or submandibular glands)

Blood Vessels (Carotid Doppler Ultrasound – if requested)

  • Blockages or narrowing in the carotid arteries (risk of stroke)

  • Blood flow abnormalities

Neck Masses or Swellings

  • Any unexplained lump, swelling, or cyst in the neck

Preparation for USG Neck:

  • No special preparation is needed

  • Remove any jewelry around the neck

  • Wear comfortable clothing with an open neckline

Procedure:

  1. You will lie down with your neck slightly extended.

  2. A gel is applied to the neck for better sound wave transmission.

  3. The transducer (probe) is moved over the neck to capture images.

  4. The images appear on a monitor for analysis.

  5. The procedure is painless and takes about 15-20 minutes.
