A Transabdominal Pelvic Ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test used to examine the organs in the pelvic region, including the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes (in women), prostate (in men), bladder, and surrounding structures.


Why is it Done?

This test helps diagnose conditions such as:

  • In Women:

    • Uterine fibroids or polyps

    • Ovarian cysts or tumors

    • Endometrial abnormalities

    • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

    • Pregnancy-related conditions

  • In Men:

    • Prostate enlargement

    • Bladder abnormalities

  • In Both:

    • Urinary bladder issues (stones, tumors, infections)

    • Fluid accumulation in the pelvis

    • Structural abnormalities


Preparation:

  • Drink 1-1.5 liters of water (do not urinate before the scan, as a full bladder is required for better visualization).

  • No fasting needed unless combined with an abdominal scan.


Procedure:

  1. The patient lies on their back on an examination table.

  2. A gel is applied to the lower abdomen.

  3. A transducer (probe) is moved over the lower abdomen to capture images.

  4. The doctor or sonographer analyzes the images for abnormalities.

The test is painless, radiation-free, and takes about 15-20 minutes.
