Early Pregnancy Scan (First Trimester Ultrasound)

An Early Pregnancy Scan is a non-invasive ultrasound test performed in the first trimester (up to 12-14 weeks) to check the health, viability, and development of the pregnancy. It is usually done transabdominally (through the abdomen) or transvaginally (TVS) for better accuracy in early stages.

Why is an Early Pregnancy Scan Done?

Confirm Pregnancy – Detects the gestational sac & fetal heartbeat.
Determine Gestational Age – Estimates the due date by measuring fetal size.
Check for Multiple Pregnancies – Identifies twins or more.
Evaluate Fetal Heartbeat – Ensures fetal viability.
Detect Ectopic Pregnancy – Confirms that the pregnancy is in the uterus.
Assess Uterus & Ovaries – Checks for fibroids, cysts, or other abnormalities.
Investigate Pain or Bleeding – Identifies potential complications like miscarriage or subchorionic hematoma.

Types of Early Pregnancy Scans:

1️⃣ Transabdominal Ultrasound (USG Pelvis):

  • Performed by placing a probe on the abdomen.

  • Requires a full bladder for better image clarity.

2️⃣ Transvaginal Ultrasound (TVS):

  • A thin probe is inserted into the vagina for detailed early pregnancy images.

  • More accurate in very early pregnancy (before 7 weeks).

When is the First Pregnancy Scan Done?

📌 6-8 weeks – Detects gestational sac, fetal pole, and heartbeat.
📌 9-12 weeks – Confirms growth, number of fetuses, and due date estimation.

Preparation for the Scan:

🔹 For Transabdominal Scan: Drink 3-4 glasses of water and hold urine (full bladder needed).
🔹 For Transvaginal Scan (TVS): No specific preparation, but an empty bladder is preferred.

Procedure:

1️⃣ For an abdominal scan, gel is applied to the belly, and a probe is moved over the skin.
2️⃣ For a TVS scan, a small lubricated probe is inserted vaginally.
3️⃣ The doctor/technician captures images of the uterus, gestational sac, and fetus.
4️⃣ The procedure is painless (mild discomfort may occur in TVS).
5️⃣ The test takes 10-20 minutes.

Is an Early Pregnancy Scan Safe?

Yes, it is 100% safe, non-invasive, and does not use radiation.
✅ Recommended for all pregnant women to ensure early fetal health.
