A Doppler ultrasound of the limb is a non-invasive imaging test used to assess blood flow in the arteries and veins of the arms or legs. It helps diagnose conditions such as peripheral artery disease (PAD), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), venous insufficiency, and varicose veins.
Arterial Doppler (Upper or Lower Limb) – Evaluates blood flow in arteries to check for blockages, narrowing, or reduced circulation.
Venous Doppler (Upper or Lower Limb) – Assesses veins for clots, reflux, or valve dysfunction (varicose veins, DVT).
🔹 Arterial Doppler:
Leg pain while walking (claudication).
Suspected Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD).
Numbness, tingling, or cold limbs.
Non-healing ulcers or wounds.
Diabetes-related circulation problems.
Suspected arterial blockages (due to atherosclerosis).
🔹 Venous Doppler:
Swelling (edema) in the legs or arms.
Suspected Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).
Varicose veins or chronic venous insufficiency.
Leg pain that worsens with standing.
Skin discoloration or ulcers.
Preparation:
No fasting is required.
Loose-fitting clothes are recommended.
Ultrasound Imaging:
The patient lies on an examination table.
A gel is applied to the limb.
A Doppler probe (transducer) is moved along the arteries or veins.
Waveform sounds and images are recorded to assess blood flow.
Additional Techniques:
Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) Test (for leg arteries) – Compares arm and leg blood pressure.
Venous Compression Test (for veins) – Checks for clot presence.
✅ Normal Arterial Flow: Smooth, strong blood flow without narrowing.
🚩 Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD): Reduced blood flow, possible blockages.
🚩 Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): Presence of a clot obstructing flow.
🚩 Venous Insufficiency: Backflow of blood due to valve dysfunction (varicose veins).
✔ Early detection of artery blockages (reducing heart attack/stroke risk).
✔ Prevention of complications (such as gangrene in PAD).
✔ Timely treatment of DVT (prevents life-threatening pulmonary embolism).
