Carotid Doppler Ultrasound

A Carotid Doppler Ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that evaluates blood flow in the carotid arteries, which supply blood to the brain. It helps detect blockages, narrowing (stenosis), and other abnormalities that may increase the risk of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA).

Indications for Carotid Doppler:

  • Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) Symptoms:

    • Sudden weakness/numbness in the face, arm, or leg (especially on one side).

    • Difficulty speaking or understanding speech.

    • Vision problems or dizziness.

  • Carotid Artery Stenosis (Narrowing) Monitoring.

  • History of Atherosclerosis (Plaque Buildup).

  • High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, or High Cholesterol.

  • Pre-Surgical Evaluation (e.g., before cardiac surgery).

Procedure:

  1. Preparation:

    • No special preparation is needed.

    • Avoid wearing jewelry around the neck.

  2. Ultrasound Imaging:

    • The patient lies on their back.

    • A gel is applied to the neck.

    • A Doppler probe (transducer) is moved along the carotid arteries.

    • Blood flow sounds and images are recorded.

Results & Interpretation:

Normal Flow: No significant blockage; smooth, unrestricted blood flow.
🚩 Carotid Artery Stenosis: Narrowing due to plaque buildup, measured in percentages:

  • Mild (<50%) – Lifestyle changes, medication.

  • Moderate (50–70%) – Requires close monitoring, possible intervention.

  • Severe (>70%) – High stroke risk; may require carotid endarterectomy or stenting.
🚩 Atherosclerosis: Thickened artery walls due to cholesterol deposits.
🚩 Turbulent Blood Flow: Suggests arterial narrowing or clot formation.

Why is Carotid Doppler Important?

Detects early signs of stroke risk.
Prevents severe complications through early treatment.
Guides medical or surgical intervention (stents, endarterectomy).
