A plain MRI of the shoulder: – (without contrast) is commonly used to evaluate soft tissues, bones, and joints in the shoulder region. It provides detailed images of structures such as the rotator cuff, labrum, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and bones.

Indications for a Shoulder MRI (Plain)

  • Rotator cuff injuries (tears or tendinitis)
  • Labral tears (e.g., SLAP tear, Bankart lesion)
  • Shoulder impingement syndrome
  • Bursitis or inflammation
  • Arthritis or cartilage damage
  • Fractures or bone abnormalities
  • Nerve compression (brachial plexus issues)
  • Unexplained shoulder pain or instability

What to Expect

  • Duration: 20-45 minutes
  • No contrast injection (unless specified)
  • You must remain still during the scan
  • Metal objects must be removed before the scan

Report Findings

The MRI report will describe:

  • Bones: Humerus, scapula, clavicle
  • Muscles & Tendons: Rotator cuff (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis, teres minor)
  • Cartilage & Labrum: Integrity and any tears
  • Ligaments & Bursae: Signs of inflammation or injury
