MRI Brain (Plain): Details & Purpose

MRI Brain (Plain) is a non-contrast magnetic resonance imaging scan used to obtain detailed images of the brain and surrounding structures. It helps diagnose neurological conditions such as stroke, tumors, infections, and degenerative diseases.

1. Purpose of MRI Brain (Plain)

✔ Neurological Disorders: Detects brain tumors, multiple sclerosis (MS), and brain atrophy.
✔ Stroke Detection: Identifies areas of reduced blood supply (ischemic stroke) or bleeding (hemorrhagic stroke).
✔ Head Injury: Evaluates brain swelling, bleeding, or skull fractures.
✔ Infections & Inflammation: Helps diagnose meningitis, encephalitis, and brain abscesses.
✔ Seizures & Epilepsy: Identifies abnormal brain activity regions.
✔ Hydrocephalus: Detects excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain.
✔ Congenital Brain Abnormalities: Assesses brain development in newborns and children.

2. Procedure for MRI Brain (Plain)

🔹 Preparation:

  • No fasting required.
  • Remove all metal objects (jewelry, hearing aids, hair clips).
  • Wear a hospital gown (if required).
  • Inform the doctor if you have implants, pacemakers, or metal plates in the body.

🔹 During the Scan:

  • You will lie flat on your back on the MRI table.
  • The table slides into the cylindrical MRI scanner.
  • A loud knocking/buzzing sound will be heard (earplugs or headphones may be provided).
  • You must remain still for clear images.
  • The scan takes 30–45 minutes.

🔹 After the Scan:

  • No recovery time is needed.
  • Normal activities can be resumed immediately.

3. Precautions Before MRI Brain (Plain)

✔ Inform the doctor if you have:

  • Metal implants (pacemakers, cochlear implants, aneurysm clips).
  • Claustrophobia (sedation may be given if needed).
  • Pregnancy (MRI is generally safe, but caution is taken in the first trimester).

✔ Not Allowed in MRI Scanner:

  • Metal jewelry, belts, eyeglasses, dentures.
  • Magnetic cards (credit/debit cards may get erased).
  • Electronic devices like mobile phones and hearing aids
