A CE-MRI (Contrast-Enhanced MRI) of the Shoulder is an MRI scan performed with contrast material, typically gadolinium, to enhance the visibility of soft tissues, blood vessels, and pathological changes.

Why is a CE-MRI of the Shoulder Done?

A contrast-enhanced MRI is often recommended for:

  • Labral tears (SLAP tears, Bankart lesions)
  • Rotator cuff tears with subtle findings on a plain MRI
  • Synovitis or inflammatory conditions (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis)
  • Tumors or abnormal masses
  • Post-surgical evaluation (e.g., after rotator cuff repair)
  • Infections (septic arthritis, osteomyelitis, abscesses)
  • Vascular abnormalities

Procedure

  1. Preparation:
    • Metal objects and electronic devices must be removed.
    • If you have kidney disease or are allergic to contrast, inform your doctor.
  2. Contrast Injection:
    • Gadolinium-based contrast is injected intravenously or directly into the joint (MR Arthrogram) to enhance specific structures.
  3. Scan Duration:
    • Typically takes 30–60 minutes.
  4. Post-Scan:
    • Normal activities can be resumed unless advised otherwise.

Findings on CE-MRI of the Shoulder

  • Enhanced visualization of soft tissues (tendons, ligaments, cartilage)
  • Better differentiation between normal and abnormal tissues
  • Detection of inflammation, infection, or tumors
