Alcohol Ablation – Procedure Overview

Alcohol ablation, also known as percutaneous ethanol injection (PEI), is a minimally invasive procedure that uses concentrated alcohol (ethanol) to destroy abnormal tissue, such as tumors, cysts, or nodules. It is commonly used for thyroid nodules, liver tumors, and certain cardiac conditions.

1. Why is Alcohol Ablation Done?

🔹 Thyroid Nodules (Benign, toxic, or cystic nodules)
🔹 Liver Tumors (Hepatocellular carcinoma – HCC, cysts)
🔹 Parathyroid Adenomas
🔹 Renal Cysts (To prevent recurrence)
🔹 Cardiac Septal Ablation (For hypertrophic cardiomyopathy)

This procedure is often used as an alternative to surgery in patients who are not suitable for surgery or prefer a non-surgical approach.

2. Alcohol Ablation Procedure

📌 Preparation:

  • Performed under ultrasound or CT guidance

  • Local anesthesia is given to numb the area

  • No fasting required for most cases

📌 Steps:
1️⃣ A fine needle is inserted into the lesion under imaging guidance
2️⃣ Ethanol (95%-100%) is injected into the abnormal tissue
3️⃣ The alcohol destroys the targeted cells by dehydration and coagulation necrosis
4️⃣ The procedure takes 10-30 minutes and is minimally painful
5️⃣ The patient is monitored for a short period and can return home the same day

3. Post-Procedure Care

Rest for a few hours after the procedure
Mild pain or swelling at the site is normal
Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity for a day
Follow-up imaging may be needed to assess treatment success

4. Advantages of Alcohol Ablation

Minimally invasive – No surgery required
Fast recovery – Done as an outpatient procedure
Highly effective for small tumors and cysts
Safe and repeatable if needed

5. Possible Complications

🔸 Mild pain or discomfort at the injection site
🔸 Leakage of ethanol causing irritation of surrounding tissues
🔸 Infection or bleeding (rare)
🔸 Incomplete destruction, requiring repeat treatment

6. Is Alcohol Ablation Safe?

Yes, it is a well-tolerated and widely used procedure
Low risk compared to surgery
Effective for shrinking nodules, cysts, and small tumors
