CT Pigtail Scan Details

1. Purpose

   • To confirm the correct placement of the pigtail catheter.

   • To check for any complications such as leakage, kinking, or blockage.

   • To assess the effectiveness of fluid drainage.

   • To evaluate the surrounding organs for any associated pathology.

2. Procedure

   • Patient Positioning: Usually supine or as required based on the drainage site.

   • Contrast Use:

     • Non-contrast scan: To check catheter placement and fluid collection.

     • Contrast-enhanced scan (if needed): To assess infection, leakage, or organ involvement.

   • Scan Coverage: Depends on the site (thorax for pleural drainage, abdomen for peritoneal drainage, etc.).

   • Slices & Reconstruction: Thin slices with multiplanar reconstructions (MPR) to visualize catheter trajectory.

3. Findings

   • Correct placement: Catheter tip in the desired fluid collection with no kinking or migration.

   • Residual fluid: Volume and density to determine if further drainage is needed.

   • Complications:

     • Kinking or migration of the catheter.

     • Blockage or clogging of the catheter.

     • Infection (e.g., abscess, empyema).

     • Organ injury or perforation.

     • Leakage of fluid outside the collection.

4. Follow-Up

   • Serial CT scans may be needed to track fluid drainage progress.

   • If complications arise, repositioning or replacement of the catheter may be required.
