CT-Guided Biopsy (Computed Tomography-Guided Biopsy)

CT-Guided Biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses real-time CT imaging to precisely guide a needle to a targeted tissue or lesion for sample collection. It is commonly performed to diagnose tumors, infections, and other abnormalities in organs or deep tissues.

Indications for CT-Guided Biopsy

🦠 Tumor & Cancer Diagnosis

✔ Lung Nodules & Masses – To confirm malignancy in lung cancer
✔ Liver Lesions – Hepatic tumors, metastases, cirrhotic nodules
✔ Kidney & Adrenal Tumors – Suspicious renal or adrenal masses
✔ Bone & Soft Tissue Lesions – Bone tumors, metastases, infections
✔ Lymph Node Biopsy – Lymphadenopathy, lymphoma evaluation

🩺 Infection & Inflammatory Disease Diagnosis

✔ Abscess or Deep-Seated Infections – Diagnosis of bacterial or fungal infections
✔ Tuberculosis or Granulomatous Disease – Confirming TB in lung, spine, or lymph nodes
✔ Interstitial or Inflammatory Lung Disease – Diagnosis of rare lung conditions

🔬 Other Diagnostic & Therapeutic Uses

✔ CT-Guided Aspiration – Draining cysts or abscesses
✔ Pre-Treatment Evaluation – Determining targeted therapy for tumors

Procedure for CT-Guided Biopsy

1. Preparation:

🔹 Fasting for 4–6 hours (if sedation is used).
🔹 Blood Tests (PT, INR, Platelets) to check for bleeding risk.
🔹 Serum Creatinine Test (if contrast is used).

2. During the Procedure:

✅ The patient lies on the CT scanner table in a suitable position.
✅ A local anesthetic is injected to numb the biopsy site.
✅ A thin biopsy needle is inserted under CT guidance into the targeted area.
✅ Tissue or fluid samples are collected for laboratory analysis.
✅ The procedure takes 30–60 minutes.

Post-Procedure Care & Risks

✅ Minimal Recovery Time – Patients can resume normal activities within a few hours.
🚩 Minor Bleeding or Hematoma – Rare but possible; usually self-limiting.
🚩 Pneumothorax (Lung Biopsy Risk) – Air leakage in the pleural space; may require observation.
🚩 Infection (Rare) – Proper sterile techniques minimize this risk.

Why is CT-Guided Biopsy Important?

✔ Highly accurate for diagnosing deep-seated tumors & infections.
✔ Less invasive than open surgical biopsy.
✔ Quick recovery & minimal complications compared to surgery.
