A CECT Abdomen is a contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) scan that provides detailed imaging of abdominal organs, blood vessels, and soft tissues using intravenous contrast dye. It is used for diagnosing tumors, infections, vascular diseases, and trauma-related injuries.
πΉ Abdominal Pain (Acute or Chronic) β Evaluates causes like appendicitis, pancreatitis, or obstruction.
πΉ Liver & Biliary Diseases β Detects liver tumors, cirrhosis, fatty liver, or gallbladder stones.
πΉ Kidney & Urinary Tract Diseases β Identifies kidney stones, hydronephrosis, or renal masses.
πΉ Pancreatic Disorders β Assesses pancreatitis, pancreatic tumors, or cysts.
πΉ Intestinal Conditions β Detects bowel obstruction, perforation, Crohnβs disease, or colitis.
πΉ Cancer Detection & Staging β Evaluates tumors in the liver, kidneys, pancreas, colon, or lymph nodes.
πΉ Abdominal Trauma β Identifies organ injury, bleeding, or ruptures.
πΉ Vascular Abnormalities β Assesses aneurysms, blood clots, or ischemia.
Preparation:
Fasting for 4β6 hours before the scan.
Serum Creatinine Test to check kidney function (required before contrast administration).
May need oral contrast (for intestinal imaging) and/or IV contrast (for blood vessels and soft tissues).
During the Scan:
The patient lies on a CT scan table.
An IV contrast dye (iodine-based) is injected for enhanced imaging.
The scanner captures images before and after contrast injection.
The procedure takes 10β15 minutes.
β
Normal Abdominal Structures: No masses, obstructions, or abnormal findings.
π© Liver & Pancreatic Masses: Contrast-enhanced lesions suggesting tumors or cysts.
π© Kidney & Bladder Abnormalities: Stones, tumors, or hydronephrosis.
π© Bowel Disorders: Inflammation, perforation, or obstruction.
π© Vascular Issues: Aneurysms, thrombosis, or ischemia.
π© Trauma-Related Injuries: Organ damage, internal bleeding, or rupture.
β More detailed than ultrasound or X-ray for abdominal diseases.
β Essential for detecting tumors, infections, and vascular conditions.
β Guides treatment decisions (surgery, chemotherapy, or medical therapy).
