Urine Creatinine

Urine Creatinine Test

The Urine Creatinine Test measures the level of creatinine in urine. Creatinine is a waste product formed from muscle metabolism and is excreted by the kidneys. This test helps assess kidney function, hydration status, and muscle health.

Why is the Urine Creatinine Test Done?

Doctors may order this test to:
Evaluate kidney function and detect kidney disease
Assess urine concentration and hydration status
Monitor creatinine clearance in a 24-hour urine test
Help diagnose muscle disorders or excessive protein breakdown
Check for substance dilution in drug tests

How is the Test Done?

1️⃣ Random Urine Sample – Collected at any time of the day.
2️⃣ 24-Hour Urine Collection – More accurate for kidney function assessment.
3️⃣ Urine Protein/Creatinine Ratio (UPCR) – Used to detect proteinuria (excess protein in urine).

🚫 Pre-Test Instructions

  • Stay hydrated, but avoid excessive water intake.
  • Avoid heavy exercise before the test, as it can increase creatinine levels.

Normal Urine Creatinine Levels

  • Men: 14–26 mg/kg/day
  • Women: 11–20 mg/kg/day
  • Random Urine Sample: 40–300 mg/dL

📌 Note: Levels vary based on age, muscle mass, diet, and hydration.

Interpreting Urine Creatinine Results

🔺 High Urine Creatinine

  • High protein diet or muscle mass
  • Dehydration (urine becomes more concentrated)
  • Strenuous exercise before the test
  • Diabetes or kidney disease (increased filtration)

🔻 Low Urine Creatinine

  • Kidney disease or failure (reduced filtration)
  • Muscle wasting disorders
  • Severe malnutrition or low protein intake
  • Overhydration (diluted urine)

Next Steps If Abnormal

🔹 Serum Creatinine & GFR Test – To assess kidney function
🔹 Urinalysis & Protein Tests – To check for kidney damage
🔹 Hydration & Diet Review – Adjust fluid and protein intake as needed
