Stool Routine Examination Test

A stool routine examination is a laboratory test used to analyze a stool (feces) sample to check for abnormalities related to digestion, infection, or other gastrointestinal conditions. It is a common test used to diagnose digestive disorders, infections, and issues related to the liver or pancreas.

Why is it done?

A stool routine test may be recommended to:
✅ Detect infections (bacterial, viral, or parasitic)
✅ Identify digestive issues (malabsorption, poor digestion)
✅ Check for blood in stool (indicative of ulcers, hemorrhoids, or cancer)
✅ Diagnose inflammatory bowel diseases (e.g., Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis)
✅ Monitor liver or pancreatic disorders

What does it check for?

  1. Physical Examination

    • Color: Normal stool is brown; abnormal colors may indicate problems (e.g., black suggests bleeding, white indicates bile duct issues).
    • Consistency: Loose (diarrhea), hard (constipation), mucus presence, etc.
    • Odor: Foul smell may indicate infection or malabsorption.
  2. Microscopic Examination

    • Presence of pus cells (indicates infection)
    • Red blood cells (RBCs) (bleeding in the digestive tract)
    • Parasites or eggs (e.g., Giardia, Ascaris, hookworms)
    • Undigested food particles (suggests malabsorption)
  3. Chemical Examination

    • Occult blood test: Detects hidden blood in stool
    • pH level: Indicates digestive enzyme activity
    • Reducing substances: Checks for lactose intolerance

Preparation for the Test

📌 No special preparation is usually required, but your doctor may ask you to:

  • Avoid certain foods or medications that may affect results (e.g., iron supplements, red meat, antibiotics).
  • Collect the stool sample in a sterile container.
  • Avoid urine or water contamination in the sample.

How is the Test Performed?

  1. A stool sample is collected in a clean, dry container.
  2. The sample is sent to a lab for analysis.
  3. Results are usually available within 24-48 hours.

Interpreting Results
