Renal Function Test (RFT) WITH ELECTROLYTES

The Renal Function Test (RFT), also known as the Kidney Function Test (KFT), is a blood test that evaluates how well the kidneys are functioning by measuring various substances in the blood. It helps diagnose kidney disease, monitor kidney health, and assess electrolyte balance.

Details of the RFT Test

Purpose

  • Diagnoses kidney diseases, infections, and kidney failure.
  • Evaluates kidney function in patients with diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), and heart disease.
  • Monitors kidney health in patients taking nephrotoxic (kidney-damaging) medications.
  • Assesses electrolyte and fluid balance in the body.

Test Components

  • Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) – Measures waste product from protein metabolism.
  • Serum Creatinine – Evaluates kidney filtration efficiency.
  • Uric Acid – Assesses kidney function and risk of gout.
  • Electrolytes (Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, ) – Checks electrolyte balance and kidney regulation.

Test Method

  • A blood sample is drawn from a vein in the arm and analyzed in a laboratory.
  • In some cases, a urine test may also be done to measure kidney function more accurately.

Precautions for the RFT Test

Before the Test

Fasting:

  • Fasting is usually not required, but some doctors may recommend 8–12 hours of fasting for more accurate results.

Hydration:

  • Drink plenty of water before the test to prevent dehydration, which can affect creatinine levels.

Medication Restrictions:

  • Inform your doctor if you are taking diuretics, antibiotics, NSAIDs (painkillers like ibuprofen), or ACE inhibitors, as they may affect kidney function results.
  • Avoid excessive vitamin C supplements before the test, as they can interfere with creatinine levels.

Avoid High-Protein or High-Creatine Diets:

  • Avoid red meat, protein supplements, and creatine supplements for 24 hours before the test, as they may increase creatinine levels.

Avoid Alcohol & Smoking:

  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the test, as it can affect kidney function and hydration levels.

Avoid Strenuous Exercise:

  • Heavy workouts can temporarily increase creatinine levels, so avoid intense exercise before the test.

During the Test

  • A small blood sample is taken from a vein; mild pain or bruising may occur at the injection site.

After the Test

Resume normal activities immediately.
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and help kidney function.
Follow up with your doctor if results show abnormal kidney function.
