Rubella IgG Antibody Test

The Rubella IgG Antibody Test detects IgG antibodies against the rubella virus, which causes German measles (Rubella). IgG antibodies indicate past infection or vaccination, providing long-term immunity.

Why is the Test Done?

A doctor may order a Rubella IgG test for:

✅ Immunity Check Before Pregnancy – To confirm protection against rubella and prevent Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS).
✅ Post-Vaccination Immunity Assessment – To check if the MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) was effective.
✅ Suspected Past Infection – To determine if a patient had rubella in the past.
✅ Newborn Screening – If a baby has symptoms of Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS).

How is the Test Done?

1. Blood Sample Collection:

   • A sample is drawn from a vein.
   • Tested using ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay).

2. Detection of IgG Antibodies:

   • IgG antibodies appear 1–2 weeks after infection or vaccination and persist for life.

Interpreting the Results

📌 Note:

• A positive IgG test alone does not indicate a recent infection.
• If a recent infection is suspected, a Rubella IgM test or IgG Avidity test is recommended.
• In pregnancy, high IgG levels with high avidity confirm immunity, while low avidity suggests a recent infection.

Next Steps Based on Results

🔬 Additional Tests May Be Ordered:

• Rubella IgM Test – To check for recent or active infection.
• Rubella IgG Avidity Test – To differentiate recent vs. past infection (especially in pregnancy).
• PCR Test – To detect active rubella virus.

• If IgG is positive, you are protected – no action needed.
• If IgG is negative (no immunity):
  • MMR vaccine is recommended (except during pregnancy).
  • Pregnant women should avoid exposure and get vaccinated after delivery.
