What is a Swab Culture Test?

A Swab Culture Test is a diagnostic test used to detect bacterial, fungal, or viral infections by collecting a sample from an affected area (e.g., throat, skin, wound, or genital area) and growing microorganisms in a laboratory.

Types of Swab Culture Tests & Sample Collection

1. Throat Swab Culture – Checks for strep throat (Streptococcus), tonsillitis, or other respiratory infections.
2. Nasal Swab Culture – Detects bacterial infections (Staphylococcus, including MRSA) and respiratory viruses (COVID-19, Flu, RSV).

✔ Indicates an infection with specific bacteria or fungi.

3. Mixed Flora

✔ Presence of multiple bacteria, sometimes indicating contamination from normal body flora.
✔ A doctor will assess if further testing or treatment is needed.
