The Rheumatoid Factor (RF) Test measures RF antibodies in the blood. RF is an autoantibody that can attack healthy tissues and is commonly associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and other autoimmune diseases.
A doctor may order an RF test if a patient has symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or other autoimmune conditions, such as:
✅ Joint pain, stiffness, and swelling (especially in hands, wrists, and knees)
✅ Morning stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes
✅ Fatigue and general weakness
✅ Rheumatoid nodules (firm lumps under the skin)
✅ Unexplained fever or weight loss
Blood Sample Collection:
Detection of RF Antibodies:
| RF Test Result | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Negative (<14 IU/mL) | Normal; RF not detected |
| Positive (>14 IU/mL) | Suggestive of rheumatoid arthritis or another autoimmune condition |
