A MUGA (Multi-Gated Acquisition) scan is a nuclear imaging test that evaluates the pumping function of the heart, particularly the left ventricle. It provides an accurate measurement of the ejection fraction (EF), which indicates how well the heart pumps blood.


Details of a MUGA Scan

Purpose

  • Measures the ejection fraction (EF) (normal EF is 55–70%).
  • Evaluates heart function in patients with heart disease.
  • Monitors heart performance before, during, and after chemotherapy that may affect the heart.
  • Assesses damage after a heart attack or other cardiac conditions.

Procedure

  1. Preparation:

    • A small amount of radioactive tracer (Technetium-99m) is injected into a vein.
    • The tracer binds to red blood cells, allowing a gamma camera to capture heart motion.
  2. Imaging Process:

    • You lie still under the gamma camera.
    • The camera captures multiple images synchronized with your heartbeat to assess how well the ventricles contract.
    • The test takes about 1–2 hours.
  3. Completion:

    • Results help determine heart function and treatment plans.
    • No major recovery time is needed, but you may be asked to stay hydrated to flush out the tracer.

Precautions for a MUGA Scan

Before the Test

  • Fasting: You may need to avoid food and drinks for a few hours.
  • Medication: Inform your doctor about any medications, especially those affecting the heart.
  • Avoid Caffeine & Alcohol for a few hours before the scan.
  • Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Inform your doctor if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, as the radioactive tracer can affect the baby.

During the Test

  • Stay still: Movement can blur the images.
  • Inform the technician if you feel dizzy, unwell, or experience discomfort.

After the Test

  • Drink plenty of water to flush out the radioactive tracer.
  • Avoid close contact with infants, children, or pregnant women for a few hours.
  • No restrictions on activity unless advised by your doctor.
