Aspergillus IgM Test

The Aspergillus IgM test detects IgM antibodies against Aspergillus fumigatus, a common mold. IgM antibodies typically indicate an acute or recent infection, making this test useful in early-stage invasive Aspergillosis or fungal respiratory infections. However, Aspergillus IgM testing is less commonly used than IgG and IgE due to its lower specificity.

  • Sample Type: Blood sample (serum)
  • Test Method: Immunoassay (ELISA, Immunoblot, or ImmunoCAP)
  • Purpose:
    • Detect early or acute Aspergillus infections
    • Help diagnose Invasive Pulmonary Aspergillosis (IPA) in high-risk patients
    • Differentiate between bacterial and fungal lung infections

Precautions Before the Test:

Fasting: Not required
Medications:

  • Inform your doctor if you take antifungals, immunosuppressants, corticosteroids, or antibiotics, as these may affect results.
    Underlying Conditions:
  • Weakened immune systems (e.g., cancer, organ transplant, HIV, or long-term steroid use) increase the risk of invasive Aspergillosis.
    Recent Exposure:
  • Living in moldy or humid environments can increase fungal exposure.

Interpreting Results:

🔹 Negative: No active or recent Aspergillus infection detected.
🔹 Borderline/Equivocal: Possible recent exposure; further testing may be needed.
🔹 Positive: Suggests an early-stage or acute Aspergillus infection (clinical correlation required).

📌 Additional Notes:

  • Aspergillus IgM alone is not enough for diagnosis; confirmation with Aspergillus IgG, culture tests, Galactomannan antigen test, or CT scans is needed.
  • Invasive Aspergillosis is life-threatening in immunocompromised patients and requires urgent antifungal treatment (e.g., voriconazole, amphotericin B).
  • Fever, cough, chest pain, and breathing difficulty in high-risk individuals should prompt further investigation.
