Anti-Thyroglobulin Antibody (ATG)

What is the Anti-Thyroglobulin Antibody (ATG) Test?

The Anti-Thyroglobulin Antibody (ATG) test detects antibodies against thyroglobulin, a protein produced by the thyroid gland. This test helps diagnose autoimmune thyroid disorders such as:

  • Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (hypothyroidism)
  • Graves’ disease (hyperthyroidism)
  • Thyroid cancer monitoring (in some cases)

Why is the ATG Test Done?

Doctors may recommend this test if you have symptoms of thyroid disorders, such as:

  • Hypothyroidism symptoms: Fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, hair loss, depression, cold intolerance
  • Hyperthyroidism symptoms: Weight loss, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, excessive sweating, heat intolerance
  • Goiter (swelling in the neck due to an enlarged thyroid gland)

How is the Test Done?

  • A blood sample is drawn from a vein.
  • The sample is analyzed for thyroglobulin antibodies.
  • Results are usually available within a few days.

Interpreting the Results:

  • Positive ATG Test: Suggests an autoimmune thyroid disorder (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or Graves’ disease).
  • Negative ATG Test: Usually means no thyroid autoimmunity, but other tests may still be needed.
  • Borderline Levels: May require further testing (such as Anti-TPO Antibody test and Thyroid Function Tests like TSH, T3, and T4).

Precautions Before the Test:

  • Fasting is NOT required.
  • Inform your doctor about any medications, especially:
    • Thyroid medications (Levothyroxine, Methimazole)
    • Biotin supplements (can interfere with thyroid tests)
    • Steroids or immunosuppressants (may affect antibody levels)
  • Avoid stress & excessive physical activity before the test, as these can impact thyroid function.

Next Steps After the Test:

If ATG antibodies are positive, your doctor may suggest:

  • Additional thyroid tests (TSH, Free T3, Free T4, Anti-TPO antibodies)
  • Ultrasound of the thyroid (if a goiter or nodules are present)
  • Long-term monitoring or treatment (depending on symptoms and thyroid hormone levels)
