Anti-Phospholipid Antibody (IgM) Test:

The Anti-Phospholipid Antibody (IgM) test detects IgM antibodies against phospholipids, which are essential components of cell membranes. These antibodies are associated with Anti-Phospholipid Syndrome (APS) and can increase the risk of blood clot formation (thrombosis), recurrent miscarriages, and autoimmune conditions like Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE).

  • Sample Type: Blood sample (serum)
  • Method Used: ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) or other immunoassay techniques
  • Purpose:
    • Diagnose Anti-Phospholipid Syndrome (APS)
    • Assess risk for blood clots (thrombosis)
    • Investigate causes of recurrent pregnancy loss
    • Monitor autoimmune disorders like lupus

Precautions Before the Test:

Fasting: Not required (unless specified by the doctor).
Medications:

  • Inform your doctor if you are taking anticoagulants (warfarin, heparin), steroids, or immunosuppressants as they may influence results.
  • Avoid high doses of aspirin or NSAIDs before the test unless prescribed.
    Timing Considerations:
  • If being tested for APS, the test should be repeated after 12 weeks to confirm persistent positivity.
    Health Conditions:
  • Recent infections, fevers, or vaccinations may cause temporary increases in IgM levels.

Interpreting Results:

🔹 Negative (<15 MPL U/mL) → No significant antibodies detected
🔹 Borderline (15-20 MPL U/mL) → May require retesting
🔹 Positive (>20 MPL U/mL) → Possible APS, requires further evaluation

📌 Important Note:
A positive IgM result alone does not confirm APS. Diagnosis requires correlation with clinical symptoms and additional tests (IgG, IgA, Lupus Anticoagulant, Beta-2 Glycoprotein).
