Anti-Neutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibodies (P-ANCA)

The Anti-Neutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibodies (PR3-ANCA) test detects Proteinase 3 (PR3) antibodies in the blood. It is mainly used to diagnose Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (GPA), a type of vasculitis that causes inflammation in blood vessels.

Why is the PR3-ANCA Test Done?

Doctors may recommend this test if a patient has symptoms of vasculitis, such as:

  • Persistent sinus infections
  • Nosebleeds or nasal ulcers
  • Lung problems (cough, shortness of breath, or coughing up blood)
  • Kidney issues (blood in urine, swelling)
  • Joint pain and fever

How is the Test Done?

  • A blood sample is taken from a vein.
  • The sample is analyzed to check for PR3 antibodies.
  • Results usually come within a few days.

Interpreting the Results:

  • Positive PR3-ANCA: Suggests possible Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (GPA) or other autoimmune disorders.
  • Negative PR3-ANCA: Usually means no vasculitis, but further tests may be needed if symptoms persist.

Precautions Before the Test:

  • Fasting is not required.
  • Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking (especially immunosuppressants or steroids, as they may affect results).
  • Stay hydrated to make blood drawing easier.

Next Steps After the Test:

If PR3-ANCA is positive, doctors may recommend:

  • Additional tests (like MPO-ANCA, kidney function tests, or biopsy).
  • Imaging scans (CT scan, MRI) to check for organ involvement.
  • Treatment with steroids or immunosuppressants if an autoimmune disorder is confirmed.
