Non-Vegetarian Food Allergy Test – Details & Precautions

A Non-Vegetarian Food Allergy Test is a blood or skin test used to detect allergic reactions to animal-based foods such as meat, fish, eggs, and seafood. It helps diagnose food allergies that can cause mild to severe reactions, including skin rashes, breathing issues, or anaphylaxis.

Details of the Non-Veg Food Allergy Test

Purpose

  • Identifies allergies to meat (chicken, beef, pork, lamb, etc.), seafood (fish, prawns, crab, lobster, etc.), and other animal products (eggs, dairy, gelatin, etc.).
  • Diagnoses IgE-mediated food allergies, which can cause skin rashes, swelling, difficulty breathing, or anaphylaxis.
  • Helps manage dietary restrictions and prevent severe allergic reactions.
  • Differentiates between true food allergies (immune response) and food intolerance (digestive issues).

Types of Tests

1. Blood Test (IgE Antibody Test)

  • Measures Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies in response to specific non-vegetarian foods.
  • Common allergens tested:
    • Red meat (beef, pork, lamb, etc.)
    • Poultry (chicken, turkey, duck, etc.)
    • Seafood (fish, shrimp, crab, lobster, etc.)
    • Eggs (egg white & egg yolk proteins)

2. Skin Prick Test (SPT)

  • Small amounts of suspected allergens are placed on the skin and pricked with a needle.
  • A raised, itchy bump indicates an allergy.
  • Provides faster results (within 15-20 minutes) compared to a blood test.

3. Oral Food Challenge (Under Medical Supervision Only)

  • The patient eats small amounts of the suspected food under medical supervision.
  • Used when blood or skin tests are inconclusive.

Precautions for the Non-Veg Food Allergy Test

Before the Test

Fasting:

  • Not required for blood or skin tests.

Medication Restrictions:

  • Antihistamines (e.g., cetirizine, loratadine, fexofenadine, diphenhydramine) should be stopped 5-7 days before a skin test as they can interfere with results.
  • Inform your doctor about any steroids, immunosuppressants, or asthma medications.

Hydration:

  • Drink plenty of water before the blood draw.

Avoid Certain Foods Before Oral Challenge Test:

  • Do not eat suspected allergenic foods for at least 24-48 hours before testing to avoid severe reactions.

During the Test

  • Blood test: A small blood sample is taken; mild pain or bruising may occur.
  • Skin Prick Test: You may feel itching or swelling at the test site.
  • Oral Food Challenge: Conducted only in a hospital due to the risk of severe allergic reactions.

After the Test

Resume normal activities immediately after a blood or skin test.
For skin tests, avoid scratching the test site if irritation occurs.
For oral food challenges, stay under observation for at least 1-2 hours.
If any allergic reaction occurs, seek immediate medical help.
