ADH (Anti-Diuretic Hormone) / Vasopressin Plasma Test – Details & Precautions

The ADH (Anti-Diuretic Hormone) or Vasopressin Plasma Test measures the level of vasopressin (ADH) in the blood. Vasopressin is a hormone that regulates water balance in the body by controlling kidney function and urine production. It is used to diagnose conditions such as diabetes insipidus (DI), syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH), dehydration, and electrolyte imbalances.

Details of the ADH/Vasopressin Plasma Test

Purpose

  • Diagnoses Diabetes Insipidus (DI) (a condition causing excessive thirst and urination).
  • Evaluates Syndrome of Inappropriate ADH Secretion (SIADH), which leads to low sodium levels and water retention.
  • Assesses water and electrolyte imbalances (hyponatremia or hypernatremia).
  • Helps investigate pituitary gland disorders or tumors affecting ADH production.

Test Method

  • A blood sample is drawn from a vein in the arm.
  • The sample is analyzed in a laboratory to measure vasopressin levels.

Precautions for the ADH/Vasopressin Plasma Test

Before the Test

Fasting:

  • 8–12 hours of fasting may be required.
  • Only small sips of water may be allowed.

Hydration:

  • Avoid excessive fluid intake for 24 hours before the test, as it can affect ADH levels.

Medication Restrictions:

  • Inform your doctor if you take diuretics, antidepressants, steroids, insulin, or blood pressure medications, as they can interfere with results.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine for 24 hours before the test.

Avoid Stress & Physical Activity:

  • Emotional stress and strenuous exercise can alter ADH levels, so stay relaxed before the test.

During the Test

  • A blood sample is taken; mild pain or bruising may occur at the injection site.
  • If combined with a water deprivation test, you may need to limit fluid intake for several hours before the blood draw.

After the Test

Resume normal activities immediately.
Drink water as per your doctor’s advice if you were fasting or restricted from drinking before the test.
If feeling dizzy or weak, rest for a few minutes and inform a healthcare provider.
