NCCT KUB (Non-Contrast CT of Kidneys, Ureters, and Bladder)

An NCCT KUB is a non-contrast computed tomography (CT) scan that provides high-resolution imaging of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder without the use of contrast dye. It is the gold standard for detecting kidney stones and evaluating urinary tract abnormalities.

Indications for NCCT KUB:

🔹 Kidney Stones (Urolithiasis) & Urinary Tract Obstruction – Detects stones, their size, location, and impact on urine flow.
🔹 Hematuria (Blood in Urine) Investigation.
🔹 Acute Flank Pain / Renal Colic – To rule out obstructing stones or other causes.
🔹 Hydronephrosis (Swelling of Kidneys Due to Urine Retention).
🔹 Bladder Outlet Obstruction (BOO).
🔹 Trauma or Injury to the Urinary Tract.
🔹 Pre-Surgical Planning for Stone Removal or Other Urological Procedures.

Procedure:

  1. Preparation:

    • No fasting or contrast dye is required.

    • Hydration is recommended before the scan unless instructed otherwise.

    • Remove metallic objects (belt, jewelry) from the pelvic region.

  2. During the Scan:

    • The patient lies on a CT scan table.

    • The scanner captures high-resolution images of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder.

    • The procedure takes 5–10 minutes.

Results & Interpretation:

Normal KUB Structures: No stones, tumors, or obstructions.
🚩 Kidney Stones (Calculi): Visible as high-density objects; helps determine stone size, location, and composition.
🚩 Hydronephrosis: Enlarged kidneys due to urine blockage.
🚩 Urinary Tract Abnormalities: Structural issues like strictures or congenital anomalies.
🚩 Bladder or Renal Masses: May indicate tumors or other abnormalities.
🚩 Post-Trauma Findings: Kidney or bladder injuries.

Why is NCCT KUB Important?

Gold standard for detecting kidney stones (more sensitive than ultrasound or X-ray).
Faster and safer than CECT KUB (no contrast, reducing risk for kidney patients).
Essential for emergency cases (renal colic, acute pain).

NCCT KUB vs. CECT KUB – Key Differences:

Feature NCCT KUB (Non-Contrast) CECT KUB (Contrast-Enhanced)
Best for Kidney stones, trauma, obstruction Tumors, infections, vascular abnormalities
Contrast Used? ❌ No ✅ Yes (IV contrast)
Radiation Dose Lower Slightly higher
Kidney Function Test Required? ❌ No ✅ Yes (Serum Creatinine Test)
Recommended for Kidney stones, urinary tract obstruction, trauma Masses, infections, hematuria evaluation
