The Anti-SSB/La antibody test detects autoantibodies against the SSB (La) protein, which is involved in RNA processing. It is primarily used to diagnose Sjogren’s syndrome and other autoimmune diseases.
✅ Diagnose Sjogren’s syndrome (primary or secondary)
✅ Evaluate autoimmune disorders like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
✅ Identify causes of dry eyes, dry mouth, and systemic symptoms
| Result | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Negative | No detectable Anti-SSB/La antibodies (does not rule out Sjogren’s or SLE) |
| Low Positive | Possible early or mild autoimmune activity, clinical correlation needed |
| High Positive | Strongly associated with Sjogren’s syndrome and sometimes SLE |
🔹 Anti-SSB/La antibodies are found in 60-70% of Sjogren’s syndrome cases.
🔹 They are less common in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), but may be present along with Anti-SSA/Ro antibodies.
Primary Sjogren’s Syndrome → Characterized by dry eyes (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) and dry mouth (xerostomia).
Secondary Sjogren’s Syndrome → Associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), lupus (SLE), or scleroderma.
Neonatal Lupus & Congenital Heart Block → Anti-SSB/La is less common than Anti-SSA/Ro, but can still be involved.
✔ Anti-SSA/Ro Antibodies → More sensitive for Sjogren’s and lupus.
✔ ANA (Antinuclear Antibody Test) → Usually positive in autoimmune diseases.
✔ Rheumatoid Factor (RF) → Positive in secondary Sjogren’s syndrome (RA-associated).
✔ Schirmer’s Test & Salivary Gland Biopsy → Confirms Sjogren’s syndrome.
✔ Complement Levels (C3, C4) → Can be low in active disease.
🔹 Evaluate symptoms (dry eyes, dry mouth, fatigue, joint pain).
🔹 Ophthalmology & Dental evaluation for Sjogren’s complications.
🔹 Consider immunosuppressive therapy if systemic involvement is present.
🔹 Regular monitoring with a rheumatologist for disease progression.
