Amoebic Serology Test – Detailed Guide

The Amoebic Serology Test is a blood test used to detect antibodies against Entamoeba histolytica, the parasite responsible for amoebiasis (intestinal and extraintestinal infections, including amoebic liver abscess).

Why is the Amoebic Serology Test Done?

This test helps diagnose:

Amoebic Liver Abscess (ALA) – A severe liver infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica
Chronic or Invasive Amoebiasis – When the parasite spreads beyond the intestines
Persistent Diarrhea & Gastrointestinal Symptoms – If stool tests are inconclusive
Unexplained Fever & Liver Pain – Suggestive of an amoebic liver abscess
Travel History to Endemic Areas – For those with unexplained symptoms after travel

Test Procedure

🩸 Blood Sample Collection:

  • A blood sample is drawn from a vein in the arm
  • No fasting required
  • Results typically available in 2–5 days

Understanding Test Results

Test Result Interpretation
Negative (-) No Entamoeba histolytica infection detected
Positive (+) Presence of antibodies, suggesting current or past infection

🔹 High Antibody Levels may indicate:

  • Amoebic liver abscess (ALA)
  • Recent or past invasive amoebiasis

🔹 Low or Negative Antibody Levels may indicate:

  • No infection, or early-stage infection (may need repeat testing)

Additional Tests for Confirmation

🔬 Further Tests May Be Needed:

  • Stool Test (Ova & Parasite Exam, PCR) – To detect active intestinal infection
  • Liver Ultrasound or CT Scan – If a liver abscess is suspected
  • Amoebic Antigen Test (ELISA, PCR) – More specific for acute infections

Treatment (If Amoebiasis Confirmed):

  • Metronidazole (Flagyl) or Tinidazole – To kill the parasite
  • Paromomycin or Iodoquinol – To clear cysts in the intestines
  • Drainage (if large liver abscess is present)
