Hepatitis Profile

Hepatitis Profile – Test Details & Precautions

The Hepatitis Profile includes tests to detect various types of Hepatitis A, B, C, and E infections. This panel helps in diagnosing acute and chronic hepatitis infections.

Tests Included in Hepatitis Profile:

  1. HBsAg (Hepatitis B Surface Antigen)
  2. HAV-M (Hepatitis A Virus IgM Antibody)
  3. HEV-M (Hepatitis E Virus IgM Antibody)
  4. HCV-T (Hepatitis C Virus Total Antibodies)

1. HBsAg (Hepatitis B Surface Antigen)

Purpose:

  • Primary screening test for Hepatitis B infection.
  • Detects acute or chronic Hepatitis B.

🔹 Results Interpretation:
PositiveCurrent Hepatitis B infection (needs further testing).
Negative – No active Hepatitis B infection.

Precautions:

  • No fasting required.
  • If positive, further tests like HBV DNA, HBeAg, and LFT (Liver Function Test) are needed.

2. HAV-M (Hepatitis A Virus IgM Antibody)

Purpose:

  • Detects recent or active Hepatitis A infection.
  • Hepatitis A is usually acute (not chronic).

🔹 Results Interpretation:
PositiveRecent Hepatitis A infection.
Negative – No recent Hepatitis A infection.

Precautions:

  • No fasting required.
  • If exposed to Hepatitis A, vaccination is recommended for protection.

3. HEV-M (Hepatitis E Virus IgM Antibody)

Purpose:

  • Detects recent or active Hepatitis E infection.
  • Hepatitis E is usually self-limiting, but can be severe in pregnancy.

🔹 Results Interpretation:
PositiveCurrent or recent Hepatitis E infection.
Negative – No Hepatitis E infection.

Precautions:

  • No fasting required.
  • If pregnant and positive, close monitoring is needed due to a higher risk of complications.

4. HCV-T (Hepatitis C Virus Total Antibodies)

Purpose:

  • Detects past or current Hepatitis C infection.
  • Further testing (HCV RNA PCR) is needed if positive to confirm active infection.

🔹 Results Interpretation:
PositivePast or current Hepatitis C infection (needs further testing).
Negative – No Hepatitis C detected.

Precautions:

  • No fasting required.
  • If positive, an HCV RNA test is needed to check if the infection is active or past exposure.
