Anemia Profile-I

Anemia Profile-I Test – Details & Precautions

The Anemia Profile-I is used to diagnose and evaluate different types of anemia, iron deficiency, inflammation, and chronic diseases. This test panel includes:

  1. Iron Studies (Serum Iron, TIBC, Transferrin Saturation, Ferritin)
  2. C-Reactive Protein (CRP) Test

1. Iron Studies

(A) Serum Iron Test

  • Measures the amount of iron in the blood.
  • Low levels indicate iron deficiency anemia, while high levels may suggest iron overload (hemochromatosis).

🔹 Normal Range: 60–170 mcg/dL

(B) Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) Test

  • Assesses the blood’s ability to bind and transport iron.
  • High TIBC suggests iron deficiency anemia, while low TIBC may indicate chronic disease anemia.

🔹 Normal Range: 250–450 mcg/dL

(C) Transferrin Saturation

  • Percentage of iron-binding sites occupied by iron in the blood.
  • Low levels indicate iron deficiency, while high levels may indicate iron overload.

🔹 Normal Range: 15–50%

(D) Ferritin Test

  • Measures iron storage levels in the body.
  • Low ferritin = Iron deficiency anemia
  • High ferritin = Iron overload (Hemochromatosis) or chronic inflammation.

🔹 Normal Range:

  • Men: 24–336 ng/mL
  • Women: 11–307 ng/mL

2. C-Reactive Protein (CRP) Test

Purpose

  • Measures inflammation in the body.
  • Helps differentiate between iron deficiency anemia (low ferritin, normal CRP) and anemia of chronic disease (high ferritin, high CRP).
  • High CRP may indicate infections, autoimmune diseases, or chronic inflammatory conditions.

🔹 Normal Range: <10 mg/L

Precautions for CRP Test

✅ Fasting is NOT required.
✅ Avoid heavy exercise before the test, as it may elevate CRP levels.
✅ Inform the doctor about any ongoing infections or inflammatory conditions.

General Precautions for Anemia Profile-I

✅ Fasting for 8–12 hours is recommended for iron studies.
✅ Avoid iron supplements for 24 hours before the test.
✅ Best tested in the morning when iron levels are highest.

Final Notes:

  • Low Iron + High TIBC + Low Ferritin = Iron Deficiency Anemia
  • Low Iron + Low TIBC + Normal/High Ferritin + High CRP = Anemia of Chronic Disease
  • High Ferritin + High Iron + Low TIBC = Iron Overload (Hemochromatosis)
