CECT PNS / ORBIT / NOSE (Contrast-Enhanced CT of Paranasal Sinuses, Orbit, and Nose)

A CECT PNS / Orbit / Nose is a detailed imaging test that uses X-rays and contrast dye to enhance the visualization of sinuses, nasal structures, orbital region, and surrounding soft tissues. It helps in the diagnosis of infections, tumors, fractures, and vascular abnormalities.

Indications for CECT PNS / ORBIT / NOSE:

🔹 Chronic or Complicated Sinusitis – To detect inflammation, abscess formation, or polyps.
🔹 Nasal Polyps or Tumors – Identifies abnormal growths and their vascular supply.
🔹 Deviated Nasal Septum (DNS) & Structural Abnormalities.
🔹 Orbital Pathologies (Orbital Cellulitis, Tumors, or Abscesses).
🔹 Facial or Orbital Trauma – Evaluates fractures, hematomas, or soft tissue injuries.
🔹 Foreign Body Detection in the Nose or Orbit.
🔹 Pre-Surgical Planning for Sinus, Nasal, or Orbital Surgery (FESS, Rhinoplasty, Tumor Resection).

Procedure:

  1. Preparation:

    • Fasting for 4–6 hours before the scan.

    • Kidney function test (Serum Creatinine) may be required to ensure contrast safety.

    • Remove metallic objects (glasses, jewelry, nose rings).

  2. During the Scan:

    • The patient lies on a CT scan table, and an IV contrast dye (iodine-based) is injected.

    • The scanner captures high-resolution images before and after contrast injection.

    • The procedure takes 10–15 minutes.

Results & Interpretation:

✅ Normal Sinuses & Nasal Structures: No abnormalities detected.
🚩 Sinusitis with Complications: Abscess, fluid buildup, or thickened sinus walls.
🚩 Nasal Tumors or Polyps: Enhanced soft tissue masses.
🚩 Orbital Abnormalities: Infections, masses, or inflammation.
🚩 Facial or Orbital Fractures: Bone discontinuity or hematomas.
🚩 Vascular Abnormalities: Blood vessel malformations or tumor vascularity.

Why is CECT PNS / ORBIT / NOSE Important?

✔ Provides a clearer, more detailed view of soft tissues, blood vessels, and tumors compared to NCCT.
✔ Essential for diagnosing complicated infections, tumors, or pre-surgical planning.
✔ Guides further treatment (surgery, biopsy, or medical therapy).
