A CECT Head (Contrast-Enhanced Computed Tomography) is a detailed brain imaging test that uses X-rays and an intravenous contrast dye to enhance visualization of blood vessels, brain structures, and abnormalities such as tumors, infections, strokes, or aneurysms.

Indications for CECT Head:

🔹 Stroke (Ischemic or Hemorrhagic) – Detects blood clots or bleeding.
🔹 Brain Tumors & Metastases – Identifies abnormal growths and their blood supply.
🔹 Aneurysms & Arteriovenous Malformations (AVMs) – Evaluates abnormal blood vessels.
🔹 Meningitis or Brain Abscess – Detects infections and inflammation.
🔹 Hydrocephalus (CSF Fluid Accumulation).
🔹 Head Trauma with Suspected Vascular Injury.
🔹 Unexplained Seizures, Headaches, or Neurological Symptoms.

Procedure:

  1. Preparation:

    • Fasting for 4–6 hours before the scan.

    • A kidney function test (Serum Creatinine) may be required to check contrast safety.

    • Remove metallic objects to avoid artifacts.

  2. During the Scan:

    • The patient lies on a CT scan table.

    • A contrast dye (iodine-based) is injected through an IV line to enhance blood vessels and abnormal structures.

    • The scanner rotates around the head, capturing high-resolution images.

    • The procedure takes 10–15 minutes.

Results & Interpretation:

✅ Normal Brain Structure: No bleeding, masses, or abnormalities.
🚩 Stroke: Blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or bleeding (hemorrhagic stroke).
🚩 Tumors or Metastases: Contrast-enhanced masses indicating abnormal growth.
🚩 Aneurysms & AVMs: Dilated or tangled blood vessels.
🚩 Meningitis/Abscess: Areas of swelling, pus collection, or infection.
🚩 Hydrocephalus: Enlarged ventricles due to excessive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

Why is CECT Head Important?

✔ Provides a clearer, more detailed view of brain structures compared to a non-contrast CT.
✔ Essential for diagnosing tumors, vascular diseases, and infections.
✔ Guides further treatment (surgery, medications, or interventional procedures).
