CT Scan of the Head (CT Head / Brain CT)

A CT Head Scan is a specialized imaging test that uses X-rays and computer processing to create detailed images of the brain, skull, blood vessels, and surrounding structures. It is commonly used for detecting injuries, strokes, tumors, and other neurological conditions.

Indications for CT Head:

🔹 Head Injury or Trauma – Detects fractures, brain bleeding (hematoma), or swelling.
🔹 Stroke (Ischemic or Hemorrhagic) – Identifies blood clots or bleeding in the brain.
🔹 Brain Tumors or Masses – Evaluates abnormal growths.
🔹 Severe Headaches or Migraines – Rules out serious causes like aneurysms.
🔹 Seizures or Unexplained Loss of Consciousness.
🔹 Hydrocephalus (Fluid Build-up in the Brain).
🔹 Brain Infections (Meningitis, Abscess).

Types of CT Head Scans:

  1. Non-Contrast CT (NCCT Brain) – First-line imaging for strokes, trauma, and bleeding.

  2. Contrast-Enhanced CT (CECT Brain) – Uses iodine-based contrast dye to highlight blood vessels and tumors.

  3. CT Angiography (CTA Brain) – Specialized scan to assess aneurysms, arterial blockages, or vascular malformations.

Procedure:

  1. Preparation:

    • For non-contrast CT: No special preparation needed.

    • For contrast CT:

      • Fasting for 4–6 hours before the test.

      • Kidney function test (Creatinine) may be required before contrast injection.

  2. During the Scan:

    • The patient lies on a movable CT table.

    • A scanner rotates around the head, taking multiple X-ray images.

    • If contrast is used, it is injected into a vein, and images are taken before and after injection.

    • The procedure takes 5–10 minutes.

Results & Interpretation:

✅ Normal Brain Structure: No bleeding, tumors, or abnormalities.
🚩 Stroke (Ischemic/Hemorrhagic): Blocked artery or bleeding in the brain.
🚩 Trauma-Related Injury: Skull fractures, brain swelling, or hematomas.
🚩 Tumors or Masses: Abnormal growths or fluid accumulation.
🚩 Hydrocephalus: Enlarged ventricles due to excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
🚩 Infections or Inflammation: Swelling due to meningitis or abscess formation.

Why is CT Head Important?

✔ Fast and life-saving for emergency cases (stroke, trauma).
✔ Accurate in detecting bleeding, fractures, and tumors.
✔ Guides further treatments like surgery, medications, or rehabilitation.
