DVT Scan (Bilateral Venous Doppler Ultrasound)

A DVT Scan or Bilateral Venous Doppler Ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test used to detect Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)—blood clots in the deep veins of both legs (bilateral) or arms. DVT is a serious condition because a clot can break loose and travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism (PE), which is life-threatening.

Why is a DVT Scan Done?

Symptoms of DVT:

  • Leg pain or tenderness (especially in one calf)

  • Swelling in one or both legs

  • Redness or warmth in the affected area

  • Skin discoloration or tightness

Risk Factors for DVT:

  • Prolonged immobility (long flights, bed rest, surgery recovery)

  • Recent surgery or trauma

  • Pregnancy or postpartum period

  • Obesity, smoking, or birth control pills

  • History of DVT or clotting disorders

Preparation for the DVT Scan:

  • No fasting required

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing

  • Avoid applying lotion or oils on the legs before the scan

Procedure:

  1. You will lie on an examination table with legs exposed.

  2. A gel is applied to the skin for better ultrasound transmission.

  3. A transducer (probe) is moved along both legs to capture images of the veins.

  4. The technician may apply gentle pressure to check for vein compressibility (if the vein does not compress, it may indicate a clot).

  5. Color Doppler technology is used to evaluate blood flow and detect blockages.

  6. The procedure is painless but may cause slight discomfort in swollen areas.

  7. The test takes about 30-45 minutes.

Is a DVT Scan Safe?

Yes, it is completely safe, non-invasive, and radiation-free.
✅ It can be performed on pregnant women, elderly patients, and those with chronic conditions.
