A Venous Doppler Ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test used to evaluate blood flow in the veins of a single limb (either leg or arm). It helps detect conditions affecting venous circulation, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), varicose veins, and venous insufficiency.

Why is a Venous Doppler Done?

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) – Detects blood clots in deep veins, which can lead to serious complications like pulmonary embolism.
Varicose Veins – Checks for enlarged, twisted veins and evaluates valve function.
Chronic Venous Insufficiency – Determines if veins are unable to return blood properly to the heart, causing swelling and leg discomfort.
Swelling or Pain in the Limbs – Assesses for venous blockages or circulation problems.
Venous Trauma or Post-Surgical Monitoring – Evaluates vein health after injury or surgery.

Preparation for the Test

  • No fasting required

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing

  • Avoid applying lotion or oils on the limb being examined

Procedure

  1. You will lie down with the affected limb exposed.

  2. A gel is applied to the skin over the veins being examined.

  3. A transducer (probe) is moved along the limb to capture images.

  4. Color Doppler technology is used to evaluate blood flow and detect any blockages.

  5. The test is painless, but slight pressure may be applied to check for vein compressibility.

  6. The procedure takes around 20-30 minutes.

Is Venous Doppler Safe?

Yes, it is completely safe, non-invasive, and radiation-free.
