A Scrotal Ultrasound (USG Scrotum) is a non-invasive imaging test used to examine the testicles, epididymis, spermatic cord, and surrounding structures in the scrotum. It helps diagnose various conditions related to male reproductive health.

A Scrotal Doppler Ultrasound is an advanced version that evaluates blood flow in the testicular arteries and veins, helping diagnose conditions like testicular torsion or varicocele.

Why is a Scrotal Ultrasound Done?

Testicular pain or swelling (due to infection, injury, or inflammation)
Testicular lumps, tumors, or cysts (to check for cancer or benign growths)
Varicocele (enlarged veins in the scrotum) (common cause of male infertility)
Hydrocele (fluid accumulation in the scrotum)
Epididymitis (inflammation of the epididymis)
Testicular torsion (twisting of the spermatic cord, cutting off blood supply—urgent condition!)
Undescended testicles (in infants or children)
Scrotal trauma (injury assessment)

What is a Scrotal Doppler Ultrasound?

A Scrotal Doppler is a specialized test that uses color Doppler technology to evaluate blood flow in the testicular arteries and veins.

  • Increased blood flow may indicate infection or inflammation (epididymitis, orchitis).

  • Decreased blood flow may suggest testicular torsion (a medical emergency!).

  • Abnormal vein enlargement indicates varicocele, a common cause of male infertility.

Preparation for USG Scrotum / Scrotal Doppler

  • No special preparation is needed

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing

  • May need to lie with legs slightly spread apart for better access

Procedure:

  1. You will lie on your back, and a gel is applied to the scrotal area.

  2. A transducer (probe) is gently moved over the scrotum to capture images.

  3. For a Doppler ultrasound, the technician will check blood flow patterns using color Doppler technology.

  4. The procedure is painless, but slight discomfort may occur if there is existing pain or swelling.

  5. The test takes around 15-30 minutes.

Is it Safe?

Yes, it is completely safe, non-invasive, and radiation-free.
✅ It can be performed on men of all ages, including children.
