Coeliac Fusion Test (tTG + DGP)

The Coeliac Fusion Test is a combined blood test used to diagnose Coeliac Disease (Celiac Disease) by detecting antibodies against tissue transglutaminase (tTG) and deamidated gliadin peptides (DGP). This test is useful for both initial screening and monitoring of the disease.

What is Tested?

1. Anti-tTG (Tissue Transglutaminase) Antibodies

Anti-tTG IgA – Most sensitive and specific test for coeliac disease
Anti-tTG IgG – Used when IgA deficiency is suspected

2. Anti-DGP (Deamidated Gliadin Peptide) Antibodies

Anti-DGP IgA & IgG – Useful for detecting early-stage coeliac disease or cases where tTG is negative

Why is This Test Done?

🔹 To Diagnose Coeliac Disease – Autoimmune reaction to gluten
🔹 To Monitor Disease Progression – Ensuring a gluten-free diet is effective
🔹 To Identify IgA Deficiency Cases – Some patients may have low IgA, affecting standard tests

Interpreting the Results

Test Result Possible Meaning
High tTG IgA Strong indication of coeliac disease
High tTG IgG Possible coeliac disease, especially in IgA-deficient individuals
High DGP IgA/IgG Suggests coeliac disease, even if tTG is negative
Normal or Low Levels Unlikely to have coeliac disease (but further testing may be needed)

Additional Tests for Coeliac Disease

🔹 Total IgA Test – Checks for IgA deficiency, which affects test accuracy
🔹 Endoscopy & Intestinal Biopsy – Confirms diagnosis if blood tests are positive
🔹 HLA-DQ2/DQ8 Genetic Testing – Determines genetic risk for coeliac disease

Next Steps if Positive

Start a strict Gluten-Free Diet (GFD) 🍞🚫
Consult a Gastroenterologist for further evaluation
Monitor Antibody Levels after dietary changes
Check for Nutritional Deficiencies (Iron, Vitamin B12, Folate, Calcium)
