Rubella IgG Avidity Test

The Rubella IgG Avidity Test helps determine whether a rubella infection is recent or past by measuring the strength (avidity) of IgG antibodies. This test is especially useful in pregnancy, where distinguishing between a new infection and past immunity is critical to assess the risk of Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS).

Why is the Test Done?

A doctor may order a Rubella IgG Avidity test if a patient:

✅ Is pregnant and has a positive Rubella IgM test (to confirm if the infection is recent or old).
✅ Needs to differentiate between a recent or past rubella infection.
✅ Has unclear Rubella IgM and IgG results.

How is the Test Done?

1. Blood Sample Collection:

   • The test is performed using ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay).

2. Avidity Measurement:

   • Low avidity IgG antibodies suggest a recent (primary) infection (within the last 3 months).
   • High avidity IgG antibodies suggest an older (past) infection (beyond 3-4 months).

Interpreting the Results
