Swab Culture

Swab Culture Test – Details & Interpretation

What is a Swab Culture Test?

A Swab Culture Test is a diagnostic test used to detect bacterial, fungal, or viral infections by collecting a sample from an affected area (e.g., throat, skin, wound, or genital area) and growing microorganisms in a laboratory.

Types of Swab Culture Tests & Sample Collection

  1. Throat Swab Culture – Checks for strep throat (Streptococcus), tonsillitis, or other respiratory infections.
  2. Nasal Swab Culture – Detects bacterial infections (Staphylococcus, including MRSA) and respiratory viruses (COVID-19, Flu, RSV).
  3. Wound Swab Culture – Identifies bacterial infections in wounds (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas).
  4. Ear Swab Culture – Diagnoses ear infections (Otitis media, Otitis externa).
  5. Vaginal/Cervical Swab Culture – Tests for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Candida (yeast infections), and Bacterial Vaginosis.
  6. Urethral Swab Culture – Checks for STIs in men (e.g., Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, Ureaplasma).
  7. Rectal Swab Culture – Screens for intestinal bacteria, STIs, or multi-drug resistant bacteria (e.g., VRE, ESBL-producing bacteria).

How is the Test Performed?

✔ A sterile cotton swab is gently rubbed over the affected area.
✔ The sample is placed in a culture medium to allow bacteria, fungi, or viruses to grow.
Results take 24-72 hours, depending on the organism being tested.

Interpreting Swab Culture Results

1. Negative Culture (No Growth)

✔ No infection detected.
✔ If symptoms persist, further testing (PCR, blood tests) may be needed.

2. Positive Culture (Bacterial or Fungal Growth Identified)

✔ Indicates an infection with specific bacteria or fungi.
Sensitivity Testing is done to determine which antibiotics or antifungals will be effective.

3. Mixed Flora

✔ Presence of multiple bacteria, sometimes indicating contamination from normal body flora.
✔ A doctor will assess if further testing or treatment is needed.

Common Pathogens Found in Swab Cultures

Infection Type Common Bacteria/Fungi/Virus
Throat Streptococcus pyogenes (Strep throat)
Wound/Skin Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA), Pseudomonas
Genital Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Candida (yeast)
Nasal Staphylococcus aureus, Influenza virus
Ear Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida species
Rectal Escherichia coli (E. coli), Enterococcus, Clostridium difficile

Next Steps After a Swab Culture

Antibiotic or Antifungal Treatment – Based on culture sensitivity results.
Further Testing (PCR, Blood Tests) – If the infection is severe or systemic.
Follow-up Culture – To confirm infection clearance in persistent cases.
