A vaginal swab culture is a diagnostic test used to detect infections in the vagina by identifying bacteria, fungi, or other microorganisms.


Why is the Vaginal Swab Culture Done?

Doctors may order this test if you have symptoms like:
Unusual vaginal discharge (thick, smelly, yellow, green, or white)
Itching, irritation, or redness
Pain during urination or intercourse
Pelvic pain
Frequent vaginal infections

What Infections Can It Detect?

🔹 Bacterial Infections:

  • Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) (Gardnerella vaginalis)
  • Group B Streptococcus (GBS) – Important in pregnancy screening
  • Gonorrhea & Chlamydia (Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis)

🔹 Fungal Infections:

  • Yeast Infection (Candidiasis)Candida albicans overgrowth

🔹 Parasitic Infections:

  • Trichomoniasis (Trichomonas vaginalis) – A sexually transmitted infection

🔹 Other Organisms:

  • Mycoplasma/Ureaplasma – Can be related to infections or infertility issues

How is the Test Done?

1️⃣ A sterile cotton swab is inserted into the vagina to collect a sample.
2️⃣ The sample is sent to a lab for microscopy, culture, or PCR testing.
3️⃣ Results usually take 2–5 days, depending on the infection.


Interpreting Vaginal Swab Culture Results

  • Normal/Negative → No harmful bacteria, fungi, or parasites detected.
  • Positive → Infection found, and treatment (antibiotics, antifungals, or other medications) will be prescribed based on the results.
