MRI Scan: Details & Precautions

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of organs, soft tissues, and bones. It helps diagnose various conditions, including brain disorders, spinal problems, tumors, and joint injuries.

1. Types of MRI Scans & Uses

Type of MRI Purpose / Use
Brain MRI Detects tumors, strokes, multiple sclerosis (MS), aneurysms, infections.
Spine MRI Diagnoses herniated discs, spinal cord injuries, nerve compression.
Abdominal MRI Evaluates liver, kidneys, pancreas, and abdominal tumors.
Pelvic MRI Checks reproductive organs (uterus, ovaries, prostate).
Cardiac MRI Assesses heart structure, blood flow, and heart diseases.
Joint & Musculoskeletal MRI Examines ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and bone fractures.
Whole-Body MRI Used for cancer screening and general health assessment.

2. MRI Scan Procedure

  1. Preparation

    • Wear a hospital gown (if required).
    • Remove metal objects (jewelry, watches, hairpins, piercings, dentures, hearing aids).
    • Avoid wearing makeup with metallic particles (especially for brain MRI).
    • If contrast is used, an IV line is inserted for contrast dye injection.
  2. During the Scan

    • Lie still on the MRI table.
    • The table slides into the MRI machine (a tunnel-like structure).
    • A loud knocking or buzzing noise will be heard (earplugs or headphones may be provided).
    • The scan may take 30–60 minutes, depending on the body part being examined.
  3. After the Scan

    • No recovery time is needed for non-contrast MRI.
    • If contrast dye was used, drink plenty of water to flush it out.

3. MRI with Contrast vs. Without Contrast

MRI Without Contrast

  • No dye is injected.
  • Used for basic imaging of organs and soft tissues.

MRI With Contrast (Gadolinium Dye)

  • Improves visibility of tumors, inflammation, and blood vessels.
  • Not recommended for patients with kidney disease or severe allergies.

4. Precautions Before MRI Scan

Inform your doctor if you have:

  • Metal implants (pacemakers, cochlear implants, aneurysm clips, artificial joints).
  • Claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces) – a sedative may be given.
  • Kidney disease (if contrast is required, kidney function should be checked).
  • Pregnancy (MRI is generally safe, but contrast is avoided during pregnancy).

Do NOT wear:

  • Metal jewelry, belts, watches, or bras with underwires.
  • Magnetic credit cards (may get erased).

Fasting:

  • Not needed for most MRI scans.
  • If contrast dye is used, fasting for 4–6 hours may be required.
