Hepatitis B Profile

Hepatitis B Profile – Test Details & Precautions

The Hepatitis B Profile consists of multiple tests to detect different antigens and antibodies associated with Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. These tests help in diagnosing active infections, past infections, immunity, and disease progression.

Hepatitis B Profile Includes:

  1. HBeAg (Hepatitis B e-Antigen)
  2. HBeAb (Hepatitis B e-Antibody)
  3. HBsAg (Hepatitis B Surface Antigen)
  4. HBsAb (Hepatitis B Surface Antibody)
  5. HBcAb-M (Hepatitis B Core Antibody IgM)

1. HBeAg (Hepatitis B e-Antigen)

Purpose:

  • Indicates active Hepatitis B virus replication.
  • Found in chronic or highly infectious cases.

🔹 Results Interpretation:
Positive – High viral activity & increased infectivity.
Negative – Low or no viral replication.

Precautions:

  • No fasting required.
  • Often tested along with HBV DNA viral load for confirmation.

2. HBeAb (Hepatitis B e-Antibody)

Purpose:

  • Appears when the immune system fights the infection.
  • Suggests lower infectivity and reduced viral replication.

🔹 Results Interpretation:
Positive – Infection is resolving or in a non-infectious state.
Negative – Active viral replication may still be present.

Precautions:

  • No fasting required.
  • Best interpreted along with HBeAg levels.

3. HBsAg (Hepatitis B Surface Antigen)

Purpose:

  • Primary marker of active Hepatitis B infection.
  • Used for screening & diagnosing HBV infection.

🔹 Results Interpretation:
PositiveActive Hepatitis B infection (acute or chronic).
Negative – No current infection (or recovered).

Precautions:

  • No fasting required.
  • If positive for more than 6 months, it indicates chronic Hepatitis B.

4. HBsAb (Hepatitis B Surface Antibody)

Purpose:

  • Indicates immunity to Hepatitis B, either from vaccination or past infection.

🔹 Results Interpretation:
PositiveProtected against Hepatitis B (due to prior infection or vaccination).
Negative – No immunity, vaccination may be needed.

Precautions:

  • No fasting required.
  • A high HBsAb level (>10 mIU/mL) indicates strong immunity.

5. HBcAb-M (Hepatitis B Core Antibody – IgM)

Purpose:

  • Indicates recent or ongoing Hepatitis B infection.
  • Helps differentiate between acute and chronic HBV.

🔹 Results Interpretation:
Positive – Recent acute Hepatitis B infection.
Negative – No recent HBV infection.

Precautions:

  • No fasting required.
  • Best tested along with HBsAg and HBeAg.

Summary of Hepatitis B Profile

Test Purpose What It Detects?
HBeAg Active infection High viral replication & infectivity
HBeAb Recovery marker Low viral activity & reduced infectivity
HBsAg Screening test Current Hepatitis B infection
HBsAb Immunity marker Past infection or vaccination protection
HBcAb-M (IgM) Acute infection marker Recent or ongoing Hepatitis B infection

General Precautions:

No fasting required.
✔ If HBsAg is positive, further tests like HBV DNA viral load & liver function tests (LFTs) are recommended.
Vaccination is advised for those with negative HBsAb to prevent infection.
✔ If HBeAg is positive, follow-up with a doctor is crucial for monitoring liver health.
