Basic Profile-I Test – Details & Precautions

The Basic Profile-I is a comprehensive set of blood tests that help assess general health, organ function, and metabolic conditions. It includes:

  1. Complete Blood Count (CBC)
  2. Liver Function Test (LFT)
  3. Kidney Function Test (KFT) / Renal Function Test (RFT)
  4. Lipid Profile
  5. Thyroid Function Test (TFT)
  6. HbA1c (Glycated Hemoglobin)

1. Complete Blood Count (CBC) Test

Purpose

  • Evaluates overall health by measuring red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (HCT), and platelets.
  • Helps diagnose anemia, infections, and blood disorders.

🔹 Key Parameters:

  • Hemoglobin (Hb): Detects anemia (Normal Range: Males: 13–17 g/dL, Females: 12–15 g/dL)
  • Total WBC Count: Indicates infection or immune response (Normal: 4,000–11,000 cells/μL)
  • Platelet Count: Helps in blood clotting (Normal: 150,000–450,000/μL)

Precautions:

  • No fasting required.
  • Inform the doctor about any ongoing infections, medications, or vitamin supplements.

2. Liver Function Test (LFT)

Purpose

  • Assesses liver health by measuring enzymes, proteins, and bilirubin levels.
  • Helps detect liver diseases, infections, and alcohol-related damage.

🔹 Key Parameters:

  • ALT (SGPT) & AST (SGOT): Detect liver cell damage (Normal: ALT <40 U/L, AST <40 U/L)
  • Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP): Indicates bile duct or bone issues (Normal: 40–130 U/L)
  • Bilirubin (Total, Direct, Indirect): Evaluates jaundice & liver function (Normal: <1.2 mg/dL total)

Precautions:

  • Fasting for 8–12 hours is recommended.
  • Avoid alcohol and heavy exercise for 24 hours before the test.

3. Kidney Function Test (KFT) / Renal Function Test (RFT)

Purpose

  • Measures kidney function and detects kidney disease, dehydration, or electrolyte imbalances.

🔹 Key Parameters:

  • Serum Creatinine: Indicates kidney function (Normal: 0.6–1.2 mg/dL)
  • Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN): Evaluates protein metabolism (Normal: 7–20 mg/dL)
  • Uric Acid: Helps detect kidney and gout issues (Normal: Males: 3.4–7.0 mg/dL, Females: 2.4–6.0 mg/dL)

Precautions:

  • Fasting is not required, but hydration is essential.
  • Avoid high-protein meals before the test.

4. Lipid Profile

Purpose

  • Measures cholesterol and triglyceride levels to assess heart disease risk.

🔹 Key Parameters:

  • Total Cholesterol: Should be <200 mg/dL
  • LDL (“Bad” Cholesterol): Should be <100 mg/dL
  • HDL (“Good” Cholesterol): Should be >40 mg/dL for men, >50 mg/dL for women
  • Triglycerides: Should be <150 mg/dL

Precautions:

  • Fasting for 9–12 hours is required.
  • Avoid alcohol and fatty foods for 24 hours before the test.

5. Thyroid Function Test (TFT)

Purpose

  • Evaluates thyroid gland function and helps diagnose hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.

🔹 Key Parameters:

  • TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone): Normal 0.4–4.0 mIU/L
  • Free T3 & Free T4: Assess thyroid hormone levels
    • T3 Normal Range: 80–200 ng/dL
    • T4 Normal Range: 5.0–12.0 μg/dL

Precautions:

  • Fasting is NOT required.
  • Best taken in the morning, as TSH levels fluctuate.
  • Inform the doctor about any thyroid medication before the test.

6. HbA1c (Glycated Hemoglobin) Test

Purpose

  • Measures average blood sugar levels over 2–3 months.
  • Used to diagnose and monitor diabetes.

🔹 Key Parameters:

  • Normal: <5.7%
  • Prediabetes: 5.7%–6.4%
  • Diabetes: ≥6.5%

Precautions:

  • No fasting required.
  • Avoid vitamin C & E supplements before the test, as they may interfere with results.
