The Aquaporin-4 IgG (NMO-IgG) test is a blood test used to diagnose Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder (NMOSD), a rare autoimmune disease affecting the optic nerves, spinal cord, and sometimes the brain. The test detects antibodies against Aquaporin-4 (AQP4), a water channel protein in the central nervous system.

Purpose

  • Diagnoses Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder (NMOSD).
  • Differentiates NMOSD from Multiple Sclerosis (MS), which has similar symptoms.

Test Method

  • A blood sample is taken from a vein in the arm.
  • The sample is analyzed using cell-based assays (CBA), ELISA, or immunofluorescence.

Precautions for the Aquaporin-4 IgG (NMO-IgG) Test

Before the Test

Fasting:

  • No fasting is required for this test.

Hydration:

  • Drink plenty of water before the blood draw.

Medication Restrictions:

  • No specific medication restrictions, but inform your doctor about any immunosuppressants or steroids you are taking.

Recent Infections or Vaccinations:

  • Inform your doctor if you have had a recent infection or vaccination, as they may temporarily affect antibody levels.

Other Autoimmune Conditions:

During the Test

  • A small blood sample is drawn; mild discomfort or bruising at the injection site is possible.

After the Test

Resume normal activities and diet immediately.
Apply pressure to the puncture site to prevent bruising.
Monitor for dizziness or lightheadedness, especially if you have low blood pressure.
