Anti-SSA/Ro Antibody Test: Details & Precautions

Test Details:

The Anti-SSA/Ro antibody test detects autoantibodies against SSA/Ro proteins, which are commonly associated with autoimmune diseases. These antibodies are often found in Sjogren’s syndrome and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE).

  • Sample Type: Blood sample (serum)
  • Test Method: ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay), Immunoblot, or Immunofluorescence
  • Purpose:
    • Diagnose Sjogren’s Syndrome (Primary or Secondary)
    • Assess Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
    • Evaluate risk of neonatal lupus and congenital heart block in pregnancy
    • Investigate photosensitivity, dry eyes, dry mouth, and joint pain

Precautions Before the Test:

Fasting: Not required
Medications:

  • Inform your doctor about any immunosuppressants, steroids, or biologic drugs as they might influence results.
    Health Conditions:
  • Recent infections or other autoimmune diseases may cause temporary elevations.

Interpreting Results:

🔹 Negative: No significant Anti-SSA/Ro antibodies detected
🔹 Low to Moderate Positive: Possible early-stage or mild autoimmune condition
🔹 Strong Positive: Suggestive of Sjogren’s Syndrome, SLE, or another connective tissue disease

📌 Additional Notes:

  • Pregnant women with Anti-SSA/Ro antibodies should be closely monitored for neonatal lupus and congenital heart block risk in the baby.
  • Often tested alongside Anti-SSB/La antibodies for better diagnostic accuracy.
